The National Insurance Crime Bureau today released its annual Hot Wheels list of the 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States. The report also lists Ohio's top 10.
Topping the list nationally is the Honda Accord with 58,596 thefts nationwide. In Ohio, the 1994 model year Chevrolet full-size pickup was the most desirable among vehicle thieves.
According to the report, older Honda Accords and Civics were by far the most stolen models in 2012. The 1996 Accord led the list with 8,637 thefts. In fact, Accords and Civics account for the first 16 spots on the most stolen list and all are 1990-2000 models.
There are relatively few newer model Hondas stolen, which the report contributes to improved anti-theft technology.
A new addition to this year's report is a listing of the top 25 most stolen 2012 model year vehicles nationwide, of which the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze came in No. 12 with 373 total thefts. The 2012 Nissan Altima topped that list with 921 thefts.
