Pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen is embarking on her first headlining tour with fellow hitmakers The Wanted. While best known for 2012's "Call Me Maybe," Jepsen and her people decided email would be better for an interview to preview Wednesday's show at the Covelli Centre due to the singer being overseas for a tour of Japan earlier this month.
Here's the exchange:
Ticket: You opened for Justin Bieber and others early on. How are the responsibilities/demands different as the headliner?
Carly Rae Jepsen’s new single is “Tonight I’m Getting Over You,” which features Nicki Minaj on the remix.
Jepsen: Opening is a blast because you get to rock through all the singles and go. It's a quick thing like "Hi, audience here is a teaser taste of 'Kiss,'" but I always crave more. I have forever dreamed of putting together my own retro pop party once I hit the road to headline. As a headliner you get to think in colors and create an experience for everyone. Come into my world - it has streamers and bright lights and things that make you go mmmmmm!
Ticket: What are some of the things you've learned from some of the other artists you've worked with?
Jepsen: I think I learn something valuable from almost every artist I meet. Touring with Justin last year was a shock. I went from playing small venues in Canada to opening for one of the biggest pop artists in at the world. I learned how important it is to connect with those audience members at the back even if you can't see them. I try to just pretend that everyone is in my living room with me even in a stadium you have to make it that intimate.
WHO: Carly Rae Jepsen and The Wanted
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
WHERE: Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown
HOW MUCH: $46.50, $36.50 and $26.50
Ticket: The name for your current tour, "The Summer Kiss Tour," was picked through a fan poll on Facebook. Where did that idea come from and is that what you would have picked?
Jepsen: I love the fact that my fans chose the tour name. "The Summer Kiss Tour" feels perfect to me.
Ticket: When you were starting out in Canada, you probably dreamed of having a number one single. How did the reality exceed the dream?
Jepsen: Actually I didn't. I dreamed of maybe getting a top 10 in Canada so the fact that things took off is incredible to me. I have always just wanted to put good music out there and if people like it and it "works" then bonus.
Ticket: What are the things that came with that success that you didn't expect?
Jepsen: I travel an insane amount. Like sometimes eight flights a week. And I love getting to see new places, but the pace is exhausting. Luckily, I have learned to sleep on planes so all is good. ;)
Ticket: You co-wrote most of the songs on "Kiss," but when you're looking at songs from outside writers, what are you looking for and what captures your attention first (beat, melody, lyrics, etc)
Jepsen: I rarely take songs from other writers. If I do sing on someone else's song, it's because I absolutely LOVE it and I can't tell you why that is. It's just a feeling I guess.
Ticket: How was "Tonight I'm Getting Over You" picked as the current single, and how did Nicki Minaj become part of the remix?
Jepsen: I just felt like having a good break-up song after singing so many lovey dovey ones. Nicki is my favorite on that track. I was so happy when she agreed to be a part of the song. We were dreaming up a wish list of rad features, and she was my No. 1.
Ticket: Performing on "Canadian Idol," you had to be adept at picking cover songs. Are you doing any covers in your current setlist and what do you look for in a cover?
Jepsen: I don't have any covers in my current show, but I got an idea tucked up my sleeve for the next record. You'll just have to wait and see. All I can say is that I love to cover songs that nobody would expect.
Ticket: What is the craziest thing in your tour rider (and why is it there)?
Jepsen: I don't have too many crazy things in my rider. Just a lot of fruit and granola and tea.
Ticket: What's next?
Jepsen: That's for me to know and you to wonder lol ;) Right now I'm just wrapping up tour and writing a lot. New Music is on the horizon.
