STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The State College Spikes put together three consecutive hits in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run in a 2-1 contest against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
It started with a Steve Ramos single off relief pitcher Briely Puerta in the ninth, followed by Cesar Velera and Brety Wiley singles to drive Ramos in to home plate.
The Scrappers lone run of the game came in the first inning, when Nellie Rodriguez reached base on an infield single. Claudio Bautista, who was on second at the start of the at-bat, tried to go home and scored because of an errant throw. That was all the Scrappers could muster against State College starting pitcher Juan Bautista, who pitched seven innings of one-run baseball.
The Scrappers return to action today against the Spikes in the series final at 7:05 p.m.
