Longtime Niles businessman and community volunteer Peter J. Gelsomino, passed away Wednesday evening, July 24, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Gelsomino, 83, was the owner and operator of Niles Sparkle Market for more than 30 years and was affectionately known as Mr. G.
In addition to his presence in the business community, Gelsomino also served on the board of Niles Community Services for several years and had served as past president of the agency.
''He was an integral part of Niles Community Services,'' said NCS director Jean Williams. ''He was a valuable board member and helped facilitate the programs at the agency.''
Gelsomino was born Oct. 29, 1929, in Girard. He was the son of Ercole and Filomena Cardiero Gelsomino. He was a 1948 graduate from Girard High School and a 1961 graduate of Youngstown State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War and was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2935 4th degree.
In addition to his work at Niles Community Services, he also served on the board at National City Bank and the United Way. In 2012, he received the Clayman Foundation Award and was past president of the Niles Kiwanis Club.
Gelsomino married his wife, Phyllis Santisi, on May 18, 1953 and she passed away April 10, 2013. He is survived by one son, Eric J. Gelsomino of Mineral Ridge; two daughters, Annette M. (Michael) Ciletti of Warren and Michele M. Gelsomino of Austintown; one brother, Rocco Gelsomino of Girard; one sister, Nilda (Armand) Carusone of Girard; and four grandchildren, Eric Peter, Gina, Kayla and Sara.
A funeral Mass was held Monday at St. Rose Church.
