WEST FARMINGTON - Raymond E. Sweeney III, 71, of West Farmington, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Raymond was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Youngstown, the son of Adaline Raub and Raymond E. Sweeney Jr.
Mr. Sweeney graduated from Champion High School in 1959. From there he went to Adams State College, graduating in 1963, and continued his education at Kent State University, where he received a master's degree.
Raymond taught for 33 years, starting his career in the Southington School District, and then spent some 30 years in the Lordstown School District. At Lordstown he coached baseball, basketball and track, and served as the athletic director. He also received the Trumbull Coach of the Year Award in 1970.
Raymond was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church, was active in the Champion Alumni Association and was a member of Ohio Teachers and Trumbull County Retired Teachers.
Surviving are his wife, Althea Dague Sweeney of West Farmington, whom he married May 29, 1965; their three sons, Marc (Patti) Sweeney of Xenia, Michael (Erin) Sweeney of Twinsburg and Marty (Abby) Sweeney of Poland; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Williamson of Mayfield Heights.
Raymond was preceded in death by one sister, Adaline Griffith.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Marvin Barney officiating. His family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests material contributions be made to the Champion Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund in his memory.
