One glance at a newspaper or a TV news show might convince a person that American values have shifted drastically. Rock stars who once performed in dresses or shirts and ties and sang songs with beautiful lyrics have been replaced by drug-addicted, tattooed thugs whose "songs" consist of unprintable cursing and whose outfits resemble burlesque attire.
Sports figures who once were idolized for their hustle and held to high standards of behavior have been replaced by spoiled, indolent millionaires who enhanced their God-given talents with any substance they can afford and often turn to crime (up to and including murder in some cases) to show their disdain for rules of conduct expected of them.
The same people who see nothing wrong with a retiree losing benefits they've worked for all their lives will campaign to grant anyone illegally crossing our border unlimited access to financial and educational aid provided by taxes that retiree paid over the years.
Money for school or local infrastructure can't be found, but we can rebuild foreign countries that consider us decadent enemies. People who wouldn't think of donating $10 to Shriners Hospitals or St. Jude's see nothing wrong with spending hundreds to watch a drug-addicted performer or indulge in a night of drinking or gambling.
The real indication of how far our values have fallen can be seen in our politicians. With approval ratings in the 20 percent range for our congress and president, one might wonder how these people were elected by the same voters who now express disappointment. We vote for perverts or candidates who believe America is the main cause of world problems, and then are "shocked" by the actions these officials take once they're in office.
While the murderer of Fort Hood troops and politicians responsible for the disaster in Benghazi go unpunished, our attorney general brings charges against states trying to control border access and voter fraud. While the IRS and NSA flaunt the law and abuse public trust, our justice department looks for civil rights violations that don't even exist in many cases.
As Earl Pitts often advises his listeners ... "Wake up, America!"
