NILES - The hot, humid July weather was the perfect setting for Tuesday's ribbon cutting at the new Niles Dairy Queen Grill and Chill.
The new restaurant is the first free-standing, drive-through DQ owned and operated by Warren-based Covelli Enterprises. It will employ about 55 people at the Eastwood Mall complex and is located a stone's throw from two other Covelli-owned restaurants, Panera Bread and O'Charley's Restaurant.
Tuesday, Caryn Covelli, wife of company owner Sam Covelli, said Niles is the only location home to three closely situated Covelli-owned restaurants like this.
Local dignitaries and mall officials took part in the ribbon-cutting, expressing their enthusiasm at the new addition to the complex.
Before the ribbon was cut, Caryn Covelli presented a $1,000 check to the Niles Fraternal Order of Police for use in the Shop with a Cop program for the area's disadvantaged youth. The money will help provide school supplies and gifts at the holidays.
Joining in on the ribbon-cutting and check presentation was the Covellis' 19-year-old daughter, Danielle, who is working this summer at the Niles Panera location as she prepares to start college at The Ohio State University in the fall. She attended the ceremony in her Panera Bread uniform before heading back to work.
The new DQ Grill and Chill offers hot grilled food along with traditional dairy queen treats. It will be open year round and offers a drive-through window.
