NEWELL, W.Va.-Daniel William Stockdale, 92, passed peacefully Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013, at the Calcutta Health Care Center.
He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Otto B. and Jessie Pierce Stockdale.
Mr. Stockdale, "Uncle Dan," graduated from East Liverpool High School and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon his discharge, he went to work for Homer Laughlin China Co., and he last worked and retired from Crucible Steel.
He enjoyed playing golf and looking for golf balls at Pleasant Hills Golf Course.
He was a member of the Newell American Legion, Post 114.
He will be deeply missed by his two sons, Daniel W. (Lois) Stockdale Jr. of Champion and Lonnie Allen (Linda) Stockdale of Chester, W.Va.; along with seven grandchildren, Lonnie S. Stockdale, Kim (Robin) Reed-Bennett, Lisa Swearingen, Edward (Chris) Ellks, Tim Ellks, Wayne (Rhonda) Ellks and Joe Ellks; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, his wife, Eileen Bailey Stockdale; two sisters, Margaret Painter and Helen Stockdale; and a granddaughter, Linda Stockdale, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today with funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nixon Funeral Home, 614 Washington St., Newell, WV 26050.
Burial will follow in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell, W.Va., where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.
