The Warren Athletic Club 14U All-Stars clinched their second-consecutive Babe Ruth state championship with a 10-3 win over the Zanesville Americans on Monday in Fairfield.
Starting pitcher Dylan McAvoy went four innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two batters. At the plate, Shawnel Ferebee II and J.J. Nicholas recorded multiple hits, while McAvoy and reilief pitcher Josh Walters scored two runs.
Consisting of players from Warren, Braceville, Niles, Newton Falls and Bristolville, this team won the state championship at the state championship at the 13U level last summer.
"What makes these kids special is they all have the same goal," coach Damein Coleman Sr. said. "They all want to be in the MLB one day. All their goal is the same - to be the best they can be in baseball - and it's working out for us."
The 14U team will now play in the Ohio Valley regional tournament on July 24-28 in Jasper, Ind. The All-Stars will square off against champions from six other states to clinch a spot in the Babe Ruth World Series starting on Aug. 17 in Moses Lake, Wash.
"We're older and we know what to expect now," Coleman said. "we went down there last year not knowing what to expect, and we're older and wiser now."
