WARREN -- A hovercraft is being used now in attempts to rescue a kayaker caught on a tree in cross currents of the Mahoning River at the rear of Packard Park.
A Stat MedEvac helicopter is flying over the water to light up the area.
Emergency personnel said the rescue is tricky because the currents, overflowing from flooding, make it dangerous for rescuers. Tipping the kayak could toss the person inside into the branches, flooding debris and currents, imperiling him.
Rescue workers were first called about 8:15 p.m. The current was too strong for the first boat to maintain position. The Trumbull County hovercraft arrived around 10 p.m. and is working to maneuver into position.
A rescue helicopter is on the way.
