WARREN - After shattering its nationwide monthly sales records in June, the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze trounced all competition as the top-selling new model locally as well.
According to numbers released Wednesday by the Auto Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio, 164 buyers in Trumbull, Mahoning and Trumbull counties took delivery of a new Cruze in June, a 73 percent increase over Cruze sales in June 2012. Cruze sales also remain up 21 percent in annual sales compared to 2012.
Chevrolet took the top four spots in local new car sales, with second place going to the Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck at 152 sales; Malibu with 136; and Equinox with 114. Ford F-150 pickup truck took fifth place in local sales at 89.
Chevy's big sales numbers helped GM dealers claim the top three spots for local sales.
Austintown's Greenwood Chevrolet maintained its location as the top dealer in the tri-county area, with 164 new cars sold, up 64 percent over June 2012 sales. Sweeney Chevrolet sold 140 new cars in June, which is up 19 percent over June 2012; and Stadium GM Superstore sold 119, also up 47 percent.
Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep sold 112 new cars in June, the fourth highest new cars sold locally in June. That number was down, however, by 28 percent over this time last year. Taylor Kia rounded out the top five, selling 110 new cars, also down 7 percent compared to last year at this time.
Ranking first in new auto sales in Trumbull County was Diane Sauer Chevrolet with 81 cars sold in June, up 17 percent over last June. Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren and Apostolakis Honda Mazda each moved 75 cars off their lots to tie for second most new car sales in the county.
Sauer Chevrolet also ranked first in used car sales in June, moving 55 used vehicles. Klaben of Warren and Cole Valley Motor Company each sold 41 used cars.
Overall, it was a good month for new car sales, with 2,428 buyers taking delivery in the three counties. That's up 294 or 14 percent over June 2012 sales. Year-to-date sales also remain up nearly 15 percent.
Used car sales in the three counties dipped slightly to 3,200 from 3,263 a year ago.
