HOWLAND - Matthew G. Cornicelli Sr., 87, died Monday evening, July 8, 2013, at Lake Vista of Cortland.
He was born Sept. 26, 1925, in Warren, the son of the late Anthony and Consiglia Giordanno Cornicelli.
Matthew was a 1943 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. He then served from 1943 to 1946 as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired in 1987 after 32 years of service as a crane operator at Copperweld Steel Corp.
Matthew was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church (St. James Parrish) and the Knights of Columbus Council 620 in Warren and was an active member of the Warren YMCA. He was an avid golfer in his retirement years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling, having bowled on the Copperweld team and in various leagues.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Leona C. Klan Cornicelli, whom he married Oct. 2, 1948; one daughter, Cynthia (James) Bliss of Howland; two sons, Matthew G. (Debbie) Cornicelli Jr. and Thomas Cornicelli, both of Howland; five grandchildren, Brian Cornicelli, Brett (Carrie) Cornicelli, Stephanie Cornicelli, Amy (Mike) Tricomi and Jordan Annandono; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph (Anne) Cornicelli Sr. of Niles.
Matthew was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Cornicelli Sr. and Samuel Cornicelli Sr.
The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel, in Warren with the Rev. James P. Walker officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta Township, where military honors will be accorded.
