To help keep police officers on the road patrolling, the township has received a new van for transporting prisoners from the county jail to the Niles Municipal Court.
This spring the police department accepted a donation from All American Taxi of the Chevy van.
Police Chief Joe Consiglio said the van was needed with costs subsidized by the municipal court.
The Weathersfield Police Department accepted a recent donation of a new Chevy van from All American Taxi in Warren. The van will be used to transport prisoners from the Trumbull County Jail to the Niles Municipal Court. From left are township trustees, Steve Gerberry, Marvin McBride, and Gil Blair, Carl Miller of All American Taxi, Police Chief Joseph Consiglio, and James Gallucci of All American Taxi.
He said the township will transport a few days each week get any Niles and Weathersfield prisoners who need to be arraigned or attend a trial or pre-trial in the jurisdiction of the Niles court.
Consiglio said the cost for the van is being subsidized by the court with the van also picking up Niles prisoners and taking them to court.
"By doing this we don't take an officer off the road when we have the van," he said. The van arrived seats a driver and up to eight passengers.
Consiglio said depending on the court cases it may be only one Weathersfield prisoner on a day, one Niles prisoner on another day or both.
"Previously we had to take one of our police officers off the road who would take his cruiser to the county get the prisoners. We are still able to maintain our full staffing for the day shift," he said.
