WARREN - A West Farmington man accused of fatally stabbing his stepfather and injuring his mother Saturday was indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury Monday on murder and attempted murder charges.
Thomas Starr, 28, of Greenville Road, remained at the Trumbull County Jail on Monday following the indictment and is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Starr is accused of killing Jeffrey Westfall, 53, at Westfall's state Route 305 home. Investigators found Westfall dead near the front porch with his throat slit.
The Trumbull County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide. However, no other information was released.
Starr's mother, Lisa Frye, 46, also was found stabbed, but alive, on the road on Route 305, three-quarters of a mile west of U.S. Route 422.
She was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. Investigators late Monday afternoon said she was believed to be in satisfactory condition.
Westfall's younger brother, Jerry Westfall of West Farmington, said the family was shocked by the stabbings. He said family members, including his brother's children, did not want to comment further.
On Saturday, a man identifying himself as Starr called the Trumbull County 911 Dispatch Center at 10:14 p.m. and told the operator that he tried to kill his stepfather, Jeff, and his mother, Lisa, with a knife.
According to reports, Starr had fled into a nearby wooded area before calling 911.
Meanwhile, a man driving by the area called 911 to report a woman lying by the side of the roadway along Route 305.
Neighbors in the rural area where Westfall's house is located off state Route 305 said they did not know him or Frye. The home, which cannot be seen from the road, sits back off a long driveway, which was blocked by two wooden saw horses Monday afternoon.
Investigators said they are still trying to piece together events that led up to the stabbings.
The killing is the first in Southington since Donna Honaker was fatally shot July 31 at her County Line Turnpike Road home. Her husband, Royce C. Honaker, 61, is facing murder charges in that case.
