HOWLAND - Irma K. Hill, 88, of Champion, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Shepherd of the Valley with family by her side.
She was born May 20, 1925, in Pielavesi, Finland, the daughter of the late Paavo and Anna-Liisa Juntonen Sstamoinen.
She met Wilbert A. Hill while attending Bowling Green State University. They married on Dec. 23, 1950.
She graduated from Drake University and was employed as a pharmacist at Ott's, then Pryce's drug stores.
She was proud to be a Finn and was fluent in five languages. She was a dispatcher for the Finnish Army during the winter war of 1939 to 1940 against Russia.
Irma was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed spending Finn week at Camp Luther with family.
She served on the Champion Board of Education and was a member of Champion CCL.
Irma was a world traveler, enjoyed gardening, baking nisu and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Memories of Irma will be carried on by her sons, Arno (Carol) Hill of Lordstown and Robert (Michele) Hill of Champion; a daughter, Lisa Cerny of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Jessica, Andrea, Melissa, Kristin, Kimberly, Anna, and Ava; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert A. Hill, who passed away Aug. 22, 2005; brothers, Alpo and Hannu; and son-in-law, Larry A. Cerny.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, where Pastor Eugene A. Koene will officiate. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home and one hour prior at the church.
Irma will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Warren.
