Cortland relay raises $65,500
CORTLAND - Eleven teams raised $65,500 for the American Cancer Society the weekend at the Cortland Relay For Life.
The relay was the fourth this spring in Trumbull County, with relays held in Niles, Warren and Liberty. The next local relay is 6 p.m. Friday at Newton Falls football stadium.
Kate Elliott, Cortland Relay's co-chair, said although the goal was to raise $84,000, they were glad for the $65,500.
She said money will be accepted through Aug. 31. A golf outing is planned for July 20 at Walnut Run Golf Course, and a Hope Ride will be held Aug. 24 on the bike trail in Champion.
Warrant issued for rape suspect
LISBON - A bench warrant was issued Friday for an East Liverpool man accused of raping a younger family member and failing to appear for a hearing in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
Ricky Eldon Wright, 33, of East Liverpool, was indicted in April on charges of rape and sexual battery.
At his arraignment on May 16, bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. Because of his reported financial situation, Wright requested and was granted a public defender.
Wright managed to make bail, though, and was released from the Columbiana County Jail with orders he was to have no contact with the victim or anyone younger than 18.
Judge Scott Washam ordered Wright to be held on the bench warrant without bond until further order.
