WARREN - John M. Welch, 80, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
John was born Aug. 16, 1932, in Mill Creek, W.Va., the son of Cecil and Stella Snyder Welch, who preceded him in death.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War, and retired from Republic Steel, where he worked as a diesel mechanic. John was a member of McKinley Community Church in Warren and loved his "granddogs," watching NASCAR and his favorite driver, Dale Earnhart Sr., and working on old cars. He enjoyed camping and traveling with his wife and children. After he retired, he would drive the Amish on trips and enjoyed sharing his stories about those trips. He was always ready to go on a road trip any time, anywhere.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Thelma Phares; three children, Cathy (David) Hughes of Cortland, John A. Welch of Warren and Deborah K. (John MacDonald) Welch of Howland; two grandsons, Matthew and Devin Hughes; and one sister, Marie Crickard of Elkins, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert (Bob) Welch.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Roberts-Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive, Warren, OH 44483. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m.
Interment will be held at the Meadowbrook Memorial Park.
