WARREN - A local education center will receive a more than $200,000 grant for literacy.
The Trumbull County Educational Service Center was selected by the Ohio Department of Education to receive $242,000 for the Early Literacy and Reading Readiness grant. The money is to support a K-3 program to assist students in improving and enhancing their reading development and prepare them to read at grade level by the end of the third grade.
"TCESC is very pleased to have received this grant to help Trumbull County school districts elevate early literacy," said Michael Hanshaw, superintendent, TCESC.
"We recognize the increased need for early reading intervention. This grant will allow us to continue to work proactively in sharing innovative teaching concepts and instructional knowledge for reading readiness among districts and communities."
Teachers from 19 participating school districts will work together to develop teaching practices to support new learning standards for K-3 English language arts in reading and writing.
The grant money will be distributed to TCESC through June 30, 2014.
TCESC is one of 91 Ohio educational entities selected by ODE to receive the grant. More than 240 applications were submitted to ODE requesting more than $44.4 million. The award winners include public school districts, public libraries, educational service centers, institutions of higher education, preschools and public or private organizations.
