Sun., 8:07pm: Rebuilt plazas open at east end of Ohio Turnpike

YOUNGSTOWN (AP) -- Two rebuilt service plazas near the eastern end of the Ohio Turnpike opened in time for the busy holiday travel weekend.

The Mahoning Valley and Glacier Hills service plazas reopened Wednesday after a two-year, $31 million construction project.

The closed plazas had created a gap of more than 120 miles between rest stops for westbound turnpike motorists and 93 miles eastbound.

The plazas were supposed to reopen last summer but the turnpike terminated the original deal in a dispute with the contractor.

The plazas mean 400 to 450 full- and part-time jobs for Springfield Township south of Youngstown.
