WARREN - The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley named its new board members and is also preparing for the annual recognition of local heroes at its Acts of Courage awards banquet.
Karen Conklin, executive director of the Red Cross, said Colleen Dattilio of Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority was named the new board chairwoman, effective July 1, during the recent election of officers. She was elected to a two-year term.
Also elected at the annual meeting were David Dobstaff of First National Bank as vice chairman of board of directors, Deborah Grinstein of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation as treasurer and Andrew Thompson of Gibson Insurance as secretary. All will serve two-year terms.
Conklin said in addition to recognizing the board - which includes 20 members with a combined 156 years of service - appreciation was given to District Action Team, with 132 combined years of service; office advocates, 75 years of service; and health and safety volunteers, 303 years.
The annual Acts of Courage ''Spirit of the Mahoning Valley'' award banquet will be held 6 p.m. June 14 at Powers Auditorium in Youngstown.
Conklin said the event was scheduled for Flag Day to show recognition to America and the many citizens who are the "true heroes." She said 19 people and organizations will be recognized.
A volunteer appreciation was held following the meeting. This was the third annual meeting.
Conklin said, "We have provided immediate assistance to hundreds of fire victims, helped over 800 military families in 2012 and trained thousands of people in health and safety."
At the Acts of Courage event, V&M Star will be honored as the recipient of the "Spirit of the Mahoning Valley Award."
The American Red Cross annually presents the Hometown Hero Awards to those residents who have had an extraordinary impact on the community or have demonstrated the values of courage, character, humanity or personal initiative.
The board meets at 7:30 a.m. the third Thursday of the month at the Quality Inn in Liberty.
