Following is my letter to the editor, which I submitted Oct. 26, 2012, and resubmitted Nov. 2, 2012. Both attempts were to no avail to make in the Tribune. The election is over, and the mainstream media is finally giving the tragedy in Benghazi the attention it has long deserved. This letter was right then, and it is still right ...
Every American should be outraged at the total disregard by recreating reality as to what transpired at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi by the president after the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack. Four Americans were needlessly killed. One was Ambassador Chris Stevens. The last time an ambassador was killed was in 1979.
The other three were Sean Smith - a foreign service information management officer, killed in close proximity with Ambassador Stevens - and, after a period of four hours, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, both Navy Seals. And, what were the president and senior officials doing to help secure and protect lives at the consulate? What did the president know and when did he know about this very dangerous terrorist attack? Why were Americans fed numerous false narratives about what transpired?
These are among a few of the questions that need to be answered.
This was not an isolated incident. In April and June 2012 there were attacks on the consulate, which indicated that this was a very dangerous area in the Middle East. June 6, 2012, there were attacks on the British ambassador's convoy along with attacks on the International Red Cross, resulting in it leaving the area. When the attack on the consulate happened on Sept. 11, it should not have been a surprise to the White House.
Why wasn't this consulate better protected? Four Americans lost their lives.
Now comes the implausible explanation that it was a ''spontaneous demonstration'' in response to a hateful video. There was even an apologetic video made by the president and Secretary of State Clinton for broadcast in Pakistan.
Four Americans are dead, and all we heard was it was the video's fault. How does the president respond to this terrorist attack? He flies to Las Vegas on Sept. 12 to campaign.
Emails have now emerged debunking the narrative that it was a ''spontaneous demonstration'' the president and his staff told the American people. These went to the situation room at the White House two hours into the attack with al-Qaida taking credit. In addition, the White House and Defense Department received video in real time for a U.S. predator drone.
Where are the Woodwards and Bernsteins who were so dogged in investigating Watergate (which really does not rise to the seriousness of the terrorist attack on Benghazi)? Americans did not die in Watergate.
The 3 a.m. call came, and the president chose to fly to Las Vegas to campaign. Americans should be outraged by his lack of priorities. Four lives were lost. It is time for a change.
