David LeMasters set a career high with 19 strikeouts, and Carmen Romano hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning that scored the game-winning run in Lakeview's 4-3 Division II first-round playoff victory over Crestwood.
LeMasters, a junior with 106 strikeouts this season, pitched all eight innings, allowing three runs - one earned - and two walks. Lakeview rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth. A throwing error by the Red Devils shortstop came with the bases loaded and allowed two runs to score. Anthony Sentner then hit an RBI single to knot the game at 3. It stayed that way until the eighth, when Jake Pishotti led off with a double, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored easily on a deep fly ball to center field.
The Bulldogs (6-15) play Cardinal Mooney in a sectional final at Cene Park at 4 p.m. today.
Canfield blanked Hubbard 8-0 in a Division II sectional semifinal. The Cardinals travel to Niles today and face the top-seeded Red Dragons at Wilder Field, starting at 4:30 p.m.
McDonald's Cameron Ifft hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to vault the Blue Devils past South Range, 8-7, in a non-conference clash.
South Range (20-4) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take a 7-6 lead going into the seventh, but McDonald's Christian Rusinowski singled to start the inning, and an error on the center fielder then put runners on first and second. After a Mike Raschilla single loaded the bases, Ifft came through with a shot to center field.
Rusinowski led the Blue Devils (17-4) with three hits, while Ifft added two singles and three RBIs. South Range's Bill Goodall paced the Raiders with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.
Kyle Orgovan struck out eight and had two hits in Grand Valley's 4-1 win over Maplewood. Mike Palm and Nick Conrad had doubles for the Rockets.
Salem's Jake Carner and Storm Haueter each had two RBIs as the Quakers beat Southeast in a Division II sectional semifinal, 7-3. Salem (9-12) travels to third-seeded Poland to play the Bulldogs today at Cene Park in Struthers - starting at 4 p.m.
April Lude socked two home runs and helped Western Reserve earn their 79th straight Inter Tri-County League, Upper Tier victory with a 10-5 victory over Columbiana.
Lude, who now has 12 home runs this year, drove in three runs. She had plenty of help as the Blue Devils (20-2, 13-0) collected 15 total hits. Gabby and Jenny Stubbs each recorded three hits and two RBIs apiece, while Marley Oles hit two doubles. Khylea Fullum led Columbiana (18-7, 12-1) with a homer and a double.
Alexis Stano struck out 12 and had three hits in Harding's 6-3 win over Cardinal Mooney. Rai'Ale Chatmon added three hits and Chelsea Dipaolo had two RBIs.
Courtney Smith scored the winning run for Pymatuning Valley in its 4-3 win over Bristol in 10 innings. Ashleyn Slusher struck out 15 on the mound for the Panthers.
Mineral Ridge pummeled Southern in a Division IV sectional semifinal, 20-0. McKenzie Garland drove in five runs for the Rams off of four hits, one of which was a solo home run, and Darby Kolesar pitched a one-hitter to lead Mineral Ridge. The Rams travel to Crestview for the sectional final at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Brittany Knight pitched a no-hitter and added a triple and a double in Windham's 10-0 over Waterloo.
Lexi Naples and Kara Taylor had RBIs in the top of the sixth inning to lead South Range past East Palestine, 4-2. Darrian Yanek, who had seven strikeouts, earned the win.
Taylor Lewis had two RBIs and Brooke Dawson struck out 10 lead Maplewood past Grand Valley, 8-6.
