It would be easy to skip voting in this election since there are so few contested races and no major issues in most communities. However, no matter how few items appear on the ballot, every eligible voter who fails to participate puts more power in the hands of fewer people.
That's never good for democracy.
Voting season concludes today with the final opportunity to cast a ballot in the May primary. We urge everybody to exercise their right.
Since Republicans in Trumbull County failed to put even a single candidate on the ballot, a devastating level of apathy, it's even more important to vote in today's Democratic primary. Except for a couple of independents who filed Monday, there will be no competition in the November general election for those who emerge with the nomination tonight.
We also recognize the wonderful example set by those who made the effort to run for office. The Tribune Chronicle Editorial Board spent considerable time researching the candidates and issues and made endorsements, which are recapped below.
However, even those who did not receive our endorsement, whether individual candidates or committees supporting issues, deserve a tremendous amount of respect for becoming so involved and caring so deeply about our communities. We would all be better off if more people, especially from an opposing party, threw their hats in the ring.
Here are the Tribune Chronicle endorsements:
