WARREN -- Herm Breuer, an Iraq War veteran, has been promoted to director of Trumbull County's Veterans Services Commission, and filling Breuer's former job as deputy director is Mark Walters, a 24-year Army veteran.
Breuer, who began with the commission in March 2006, and Walters, who started there in June 2007, will continue to do the work as service officers, helping veterans and their dependents to get military benefits.
Breuer served in the National Guard for a dozen years and has served the past two years as president of the Ohio State Association of County Veterans Service Officers. He is also a member of Disabled American Veterans Trumbull County chapter 11, Military Order of Purple Hearts and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Walters, an Army 1st Sgt., is a member of American Legion. Both men are nationally and state accredited service officers.
Former director Wayne Westover is staying on as a service officer.
The office has four service officers, including Breuer and Walters, a relief investigator, office manager, two van drivers and a volunteer. There are about 19,000 veterans in Trumbull County, ranking it 12th among Ohio' 88 counties.
