Fri. 2:31pm: Workers find goldfish in Ohio nuclear plant tunnel

May 3, 2013
Tribune Chronicle |

Operators of a nuclear reactor near Cleveland want to know how two goldfish got into an underground steam tunnel at the plant.

The goldfish were found earlier this week swimming in a juice pitcher placed in the tunnel.

A spokeswoman for plant owner FirstEnergy Corp. says it's almost certain that an employee or contractor smuggled them inside the Perry plant.

FirstEnergy's Jennifer Young says the goldfish didn't pose a safety concern. But she says bringing them into the nuclear plant isn't acceptable.

She says plant officials are reviewing security cameras and log books to find who's responsible.

The goldfish didn't survive. Tests found they had slightly high levels of radiation but probably died from lack of care.

Federal regulators tell The Plain Dealer in Cleveland they're looking into what happened.
