BAZETTA - A fundraiser is set for 6 p.m. today to raise money for improvements to Bazetta Park.
"With the money we raise, we want to put on free community days, so there will be bands playing and the food will be on us, like in the old days," said Steve Blecher, chairman of the park board.
This year the park department is afforded $34,800, though it is largely dependant on income from the fundraiser. Last year the event brought in about $12,000. Without it township Fiscal Officer Rita Drew said the budget only allows for basic maintenance to the park.
This year, Belcher said the goal is not as high as in the past. They are hoping to raise about $2,000 through a silent auction and live auction held at the Bazetta Cortland Optimist Club. This is the third year for the event.
"In the last two years we've made such significant improvements to the park and we've done so with pretty much 100 percent volunteer effort," Belcher said.
The park has used the money raised in the past to add new features to the park including a walking trail that encircles the park, a patio around Imagination Station - the children's play area - and a new pavilion to house bands. They still have about 12,000 left over from the previous two years.
Belcher said items up for bid will include tickets to the air base, new bicycles, and a $200 gift certificate for catering, among other gift cards.
