Mon., 6:17am: Warren's TBEIC on economic summit agenda

April 15, 2013
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

SALEM - Teaming for Success, the 2013 Columbiana County Economic Summit, will be held at the Salem Community Center on May 6, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The one-day event's theme is "Growing Northeast Ohio's Competitiveness" and is the fourth year for the summit that rotates from Salem to East Liverpool each year.

Last year, the subtitle "Teaming4Success" became prominent and was spun off from the fact that more than 40 companies throughout region and Columbiana County sponsored the 2012 event. This year is being called Teaming4Success2013.

The event will start with opening remarks by Mayor John Berlin followed at 9:15 a.m. by Columbiana County County Commissioner Mike Halleck who will provide an update on the U.S. Route 30 completion.

The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Initiative from the Youngstown business incubator is on the agenda, something which Larry Kosiba, executive director of the Sustainable Opportunity Development Center (SOD Center), said will be "kind of exciting."

Last year's two-day event, "Doing Business in the Oil & Gas Industry" included a one-day job fair, Kosiba said, noting that it is something viewed as unnecessary for 2013.

The NAMII (namii.org) is organized under the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) launched by President Obama in March of 2012 and will feature a one-hour presentation by Barb Ewing at 10:45 a.m.

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) was selected last August to manage a pilot program under the NNMI called the NAMII with headquarters in Youngstown.

A year ago, the NNMI established its focus area in additive manufacturing.

Also on the agenda is TeamNEO that was established in 2003 by FirstEnergy Corporation, the Greater Akron Chamber, the Stark Development Board, the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce, the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber, and the Greater Cleveland Partnership and is aimed at strengthening the region's economic development.

The presentation is set for 9:30 a.m.

The mission is attracting business by pooling community assets, marketing the collective region and exponentially increasing business opportunities. In 2011, the state of Ohio selected Team NEO as the JobsOhio network partner for Northeast Ohio.

Today, Team NEO facilitates regional strategy development by increasing collaboration among economic development groups.

The Tech Belt Energy Initiative is also set for a 1 p.m. presentation by Dave Nestic, who is a Salem city councilman.

The initiative began as a regional conversation about developing a strategy to reinvigorate the Cleveland-to-Pittsburgh corridor and the surrounding region.

According to its website, "The continued transition to a technology and knowledge-based economy combined with our industrial and academic assets, dictates that the region is poised for renewed growth.

"To achieve success we must identify opportunities to collaborate in the creation of new products, technologies, companies and wealth. The conversation has resulted in the formation of a collaborative effort known as the TechBelt Initiative."

Visit www.techbelt.org for more information.

Mary Ann Pacelli of MAGNET - Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network will talk at 1:50 p.m.

In a recent published story, Pacelli said MAGNET has been working with small and mid-sized manufacturers in Northeast Ohio helping them shore up quality, improve productivity, workforce training while developing new products.

According to MAGNET, its mission "... is to support, educate and champion manufacturing with the goal of transforming the region's economy into a powerful, global player."

Recently, it aims more on growth planning.

At 2:30 p.m. there will be a presentation by the Youngstown-Warren Chamber on API Certification for Oil & Gas.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the cost is $50 per person.

Sponsorship is also available for $100.

To register or to become a sponsor contact the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce @ 330-337-3473 or e-mail tlpeppel@salemohiochamber.org.
