The Niles girls' softball team will be honoring veterans with a Salute to the Troops at 4 p.m. April 16 at the south field at Waddell Park.
In the event of rain, the celebration and game between the Niles girls' softball team and Struthers will be rescheduled for April 17.
''We would like to get as many veterans to attend as possible,'' said girls' softball coach Ugo Scarnecchia.
Veterans will line up in the outfield at 4 p.m., Scarnecchia said. Included in the ceremony will be Rachel Libert of Niles who will sing the national anthem. The Niles McKinley High School Chorus will perform ''Proud to Be An American.''
Both Niles and Struthers teams will be wearing camouflage uniforms and the foul lines will be painted red, white and blue rather than the traditional white, he said.
There is no admission to attend the ceremony and game. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Wounded Warriors organization. Following the ceremony, the softball game will begin at 5 p.m.
''We want to teach our kids respect for our veterans and what they did,'' Scarnecchia said.
All area veterans are invited to attend. Family members also are invited to attend in memory of their loved ones.
Veterans and family members are asked to call Scarnecchia at 330-544-4682 to ensure ample parking for the event.
The girls' softball season began March 30 and will run until the middle of May.
