Tue., 1:10pm: Appeals court overturns Youngstown man's assault, kidnapping convictions

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Seventh District Court of Appeals today overturned the felonious assault and kidnapping convictions against an East Side man.

In a 2-1 vote, the appeals court sent the case of 34-year-old Richard Wright back to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a new trial.

He was convicted in 2010 of the charges by a jury.

In its ruling favoring Wright, the judges wrote that they overturned his convictions in large part because jurors found him guilty of felonious assault yet innocent of a specification that a firearm was used to commit the crime.
