HOWLAND - Maria Efstathiu, 100, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.
Maria was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Pilona Rhodes, Greece, the daughter of Savas Tsambikos and Despina Kypreou Fakkas.
Maria came to Warren in 1948 from Greece. She was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and especially her family.
Maria is survived by her two children, Despina Vardavas and Panaiota "Penny" Magiassos, both of Howland; seven grandchildren, Irene (George) Culetsu, Maria (George) Pahoulis and Savas "Sam" (Maria) Magiassos, all of Howland, Dino Vardavas of Poland, Bill (Sue) Vardavas of Warren, Chris (Kim) Vardavas of Jupiter, Fla., and Steve (Niki) Vardavas of Canton; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Flora Fakkas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vasili Efstathiu, whom she married Jan. 29, 1929, and who passed away May 20, 1972; two brothers, Stergos and Emanuel Fakkas; a great-grandson, Panayioti "Noti" Culetsu; and two sons-in-law, Vartholomeos Vardavas and Emanuel Magiassos.
Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday with a Trisagion Service at 4 p.m. and from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel in Warren. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. Constantine Valantasis officiating. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.
