A little known fact about me is that I'm a closet NASCAR fan. Never would have guessed, huh?
I will admit, I know very little about cars. I can't fix a flat tire, I don't know exactly what an alternator does and I'm guessing if I tried to drive a stick shift, it wouldn't go very well. With that being said, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the sport of NASCAR.
It started back in college, when I had the opportunity to cover the Pocono 500 in Long Pond, Pa. I was in the pits... I was in the infield... I felt the wind as the cars zoomed past me. I interviewed Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart. And ever since then, while I might not watch an entire race on Sunday, I still keep an eye out on how the field plays out, and where my favorite No. 48 car finishes.
Today is the Super Bowl of NASCAR as the Daytona 500 kicks off the 2013 season. A woman is making history today as Danica Patrick is on the pole, once again etching herself deeper into a sport forever fueled by men.
While I'll in no way conquer the world of NASCAR in even the distant future, I think this year I am going to try my hand at the Tribune Chronicle's UPick'Em NASCAR contest.
The contest is very simple to register and partake in. First off, go to the Tribune Chronicle's web site, www.tribtoday.com, and go to the sports section. Once there, on the right side of the page you will see a link to click on for the "NASCAR UPick'Em Challenge."
The link will then take you to the picks site. It doesn't take long to register, and if you've played in any of the previous challenges over the season (NASCAR, football, etc.) you are already registered.
From there it's easy, all you have to do is pick the 10 drivers you think will finish first through 10th for each race. If you forget to pick a week, don't worry, the computer will pick for you.
After your top 10 are picked, drivers are awarded fantasy points based on their finishes. Weekly, you will be entered into the Tribune Chronicle's local contest and into the national contest. If you win the weekly contest, you will win a large pizza with one topping from the Sunrise Inn in Warren and a $10 gas card. If you were to win the national contest on any given week, you will win a NASCAR prize from Fathead.
Now, those points will be tracked over the course of the season. The Tribune is splitting the contest into two halves. The overall winner of each half will win a 32-inch television.
And finally, if you are the ultimate NASCAR prognosticator, and you can win the overall, national contest, you could win a trip for two to the 2014 Daytona 500.
That's what I call a contest.
You can still pick your drivers up to 12:45 p.m. today. So come on and play. You have a chance to beat me and win pizza and gas.
I think that's a a heck of a deal.
