NEWTON FALLS - Joseph P. Sofranik, 85, died at 1:05 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Vibra Hospital at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 16, 1927, in Newton Falls, the son of Steve and Elizabeth Butkovsky Sofranik.
Joseph served as a seaman first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as a chief mate in the Merchant Marines after 25 years of service.
He is survived by two brothers, Paul J. (Virginia) Sofranik of Orlando, Fla., and Julius A. Sofranik of Scott Valley, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Maria Sofranik of Austintown; four nieces, Rosita (Shailen) Shah of Malvern, Pa., Linda (William) Casper of Lordstown, Sharon (Greg) Kozak of Mineral Ridge and Laura Rivello of Lakeland, Fla.; as well as five nephews, Steve Sofranik of Lordstown, James Sofranik of Youngstown, John (Barbara) Carduner of Baltimore, Keith (Simona) Carduner of Bloomfield, Mich., and Thomas Carduner of Liberty, N.Y.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael J. and Steve P. Sofranik; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Marie Sofranik.
Memorial calling hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, with a 2 p.m. memorial service to follow. The Rev. Bernard Schmalzried will officiate, and burial of cremains will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Newton Falls.
