NILES - Doris Cleaton Egler, 93, formerly of Ohio Avenue, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home, Gloversville, N.Y.
Mrs. Egler was born June 8, 1919, in Niles, the daughter of Ernest and Alice Robertson Cleaton.
A lifetime resident of Niles and member of the Niles First United Methodist, she had taught Sunday school in the primary age department in the church.
A former employee of the Niles GE Ohio Lamp Plant, she graduated in 1937 from Niles McKinley High School, where she had continued to act as class photographer for her class reunions.
While in school, she participated on the basketball team, played softball for the Niles Merchants and enjoyed swimming and bowling. She will be remembered as part of the "McDonald's Morning Club." She also volunteered for more than 20 years for the Board of Elections. She was an ardent fan of the Cleveland Indians.
She was preceded in death Jan. 25, 2000, by her husband, Joseph F. Egler, whom she married Dec. 8, 1943.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Claudia I. (Thomas) Baytos of Niles; her sister, Irene (Stanley) Wittenauer of Boardman; brother-in-law, Marvin Egler; her two grandchildren, Mark (Candace) Baytos and Renee A. (Kevin) Blowers, who helped care for her while she was in New York; her five great-grandchildren, Chase, Christian, Kaelen, Brooklyn and Jackson; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Larry J. Egler, and her brother, Jack Cleaton.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home, where there will be funeral services at noon with the Rev. Nathan Howe officiating.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
