YOUNGSTOWN - Police found a handgun on a North Side off ramp about 10:45 p.m. Thursday after they stopped a man for speeding and he ran away on foot.
Edward Johnson, 38, of Southern Boulevard, was pulled over for speeding on the Wick Avenue off-ramp for U.S. Route 422 and told police he had to leave because he was going to the hospital to visit his mother, who he said was dying of cancer.
Police asked for permission to search the car. When Johnson got out of the car police found a semiautomatic .22-caliber pistol loaded with three rounds.
Johnson ran away as police tried to handcuff him and he hid in the woods. A perimeter was set up, and officers found him in a wooded area off Scott Street and took him to the Mahoning County Jail on weapons and drug charges.
