CORTLAND - Gary Hugh McBride Sr., 82, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., where he lived for 14 years and recently returned to Cortland, passed away Tuesday, Feb.5, 2013.
He was born Nov. 25, 1930, in Vandergrift, Pa., the son of the late Henry Hugh and Mazie Marie Hartzell McBride.
Gary was employed by Packard Electric as an electrician for 39 years.
He was very proud of his Naval service, often recalling stories of his time on board the USS Salem (CA-139), where he served as an electrician's mate during the Korean War.
He was a member of Copper Penny Lodge 778.
He enjoyed the Atlanta Braves, traveling, raising horses and most of all his 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marilyn Stein, whom he married Jan. 26, 1976; his sons, Gary H. (Melanie) McBride Jr. of Cortland, Robert J. (Tern) McBride of Cortland and Mark Hathaway of Kinsman; daughters, Kaylene McBride of Warren, Carol S. (Antony) of Okinawa, Japan, and Debbie (Lee) Ely of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; grandchildren, Daniel Tutor, David Tutor, Alicia Morton, Robert McBride, Mathew McBride, Sean McBride, Brendan McBride, Tyler Lemley, Taylor Lemley, Antony Burns, Abbie Burns and Michael Burns; great-grandchildren, Destini, Tyler, Cory, Liam, Ava, Lochian, Molly and Connor; and a sister, Nancy (Harlan) Lichty of Port Charlotte, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepsister, Charlotte Consider.
A private memorial service will be held for family members today at 11:30 a.m. at Whetstone Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours.
