NEWTON FALLS - The joint fire district's clerk and treasurer has put in his two weeks' notice to resign after holding the position for less than six months.
Richard Hoover, who has held the dual position for the district since September 2012, emailed his resignation to chairwoman Nancy Hoffman Sunday night, according to board member Greg Dubos. The resignation will become effective Feb. 17.
Hoover was hired after the district and Newton Township began proceedings to sue the former financial director who left both organizations' finances in a shambles.
"It was a surprise to me," said Dubos, "and a surprise for her (Hoffman)."
The district is undergoing a 2010-11 audit after a consultant was hired to reconstruct its books which State Auditor David Yost deemed unauditable in October 2012.
The fire board will be meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday to discuss Hoover's resignation.
Hoover was unable to be reached this afternoon.
This is a developing story.
