YOUNGSTOWN - A man was killed in an East Side public housing project late Friday morning and police are trying to find out what he was doing there.
Chief Rod Foley said David Stokes, 53, was one of three men in a car that was on Rosewood Lane in the Rockford Village apartment complex and was shot in the parking lot about 11:45 a.m.
A second man in the car, Matthew Sharp, whose age was not given, was shot in the leg. A third person was not injured and was being questioned by police, Foley said.
About two hours after the shooting, another man showed up at St. Elizabeth Health Center claiming to have been shot near the Galaxy Seafood Restaurant on Belmont Avenue.
Foley said there are concerns that man's injuries may be connected to the shooting in Rockford Village and police are checking his story to see if perhaps he was shot with the other two men.
''We're trying to determine if these individuals were all tied into the same incident,'' Foley said.
Additionally, Foley said detectives are trying to find out how and why the men went to Rockford Village. They are from Columbiana County, Foley said.
''We're trying to put together how they ended up where they did,'' Foley said.
Foley said the investigation is progressing quickly but there are still a lot of things to check out.
''We have a direction we're heading with the investigation,'' Foley said. ''We have a long way to go yet.''
Stokes' death is the first homicide in Youngstown in 2013. In 2012, Youngstown had 26 homicides.
