CORTLAND - Four families were displaced after a fire broke out Saturday at a condominium complex on at 723 Lakeview Drive, firefighters said.
A fire department spokesman said crews were called about 9:25 a.m. for a report of an attic fire, and found flames coming from the two units in the middle of a four-unit complex. The two units on the end suffered smoke and water damage.
All four units were occupied at the time but everyone managed to get out, the spokesman said. The Red Cross is helping all four families find a place to stay, he said. No one was injured.
The caller, identified on fire reports as Michael Devonis, said he and his children were in their apartment - his 3-year-old daughter upstairs taking a nap - when he discovered the fire in a second-story attic area. He said he sent his kids outside while he tried to extinguish the flames himself before leaving also.
Crews from Howland, Vienna, the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Mecca, Johnston, Bazetta and Champion assisted. A damage estimate is not yet available, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the spokesman said.
