CORTLAND - Joseph Blaine Helmick, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1944, in Baltimore, the son of Dickson Helmick and the late Jane Nethken Helmick.
Joe was a graduate of Youngstown State University and received his bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked at Bankers Life and Causality for 12 years and retired from Falcon Transport after 14 years, where he had worked as a dispatch supervisor.

He was a member of Bazetta Christian Church, where he had served as an elder, and was currently attending Grace Fellowship Church. Joe was a lifelong member of the Cortland Masonic Lodge and the NRA.
He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. He loved to golf, garden and take long walks with his wife as well as travel with his family. Joe was also an avid sports fan and had coached all three of his children when they were younger. Above all, he will be remembered as a man who was deeply rooted in both his faith and his family.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Beverly Conley Helmick, whom he married Aug. 29, 1964; his father, Dickson Helmick of Cortland; two daughters, Kimberly (Matt) Falter of Cortland and Karen (Steve) Smith of Champion; his son, Kevin (Amie) Helmick of Cortland; a brother, James (Linda) Helmick of Bristolville; and a sister, Jacqueline (Ken) Perman of Berea, Ky.
Also surviving are his four grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachelle Calvin, Allison Smith and Preston Helmick.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bazetta Christian Church, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
