CORTLAND- Ralph A. Guesman, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday night, Jan. 13, 2013, at St. Joseph Health Center, surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Fowler, to the late Albert Price Guesman and Marcella Heltzel Guesman.
He was the retired superintendent of streets and utilities for the City of Cortland.
Ralph was a retired volunteer captain of the Cortland Volunteer Fire Department.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force as an airman second class during the Korean War.
He was a lifetime member of the Cortland Firefighters Association and a member of the American Waterworks Association.
Ralph enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and road trips and delighted in his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Louise Moyers Guesman, whom he married on Feb. 21, 1952; three children, son Ralph E. (Kate) Guesman of Cortland, daughter Deborah S. Guesman Goldner of Cortland and son Christopher L. (Sherry) Guesman of Cortland; and his brother, Harlan E. (Lily) Guesman of Cortland. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Fried of Peninsula, Kristy (Joe) Johnson of Cortland, Kara (Shaun) Totten of Warren, Ralph Adam Guesman of Akron, David (Stacy) Goldner of Cortland, Michael (Charity) Goldner of St. Peter, Minn., Brian Goldner of Warren and Jessica and Christopher Guesman of Warren. Ralph will also be missed by 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ralph Michael Guesman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, where funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday. The family will again receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
