LEAVITTSBURG - Project Be Somebody is collecting food items to open a food pantry in February at 4814 W. Market St.
Lisa Booze with Project Be Somebody said the effort was discussed late last year after the organization acquired building space in downtown Leavittsburg; she said the group will work with Second Harvest Food Bank.
Booze said the location is being readied for a February opening. Work began in November, and canned goods are being collected.
"There is a need for this. There are children who go to school hungry," Booze said.
Booze said she met with Second Harvest Food Bank and shared with them stories and how the food pantry was needed in the Leavittsburg area.
"I was very glad we are starting this," she said.
The food pantry will open from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. weekdays.
Booze said work has been done with walls painted and work done in the interior of the building to transform it into a food pantry.
She said anyone with donations can bring them to the location from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays in January.
"There are many people locally in need of emergency food," she said.
To help raise funds and collect canned goods and non-perishables at the same time, fundraising events have been planned which include a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at LaBrae High School and a bus trip at 9 a.m. March 16 to Pittsburgh.
