March 19 is the date the 2013 Trumbull County Community Stars will be honored at the W.D. Packard Music Hall. This will be the 12th group to be selected from nominations sent in by readers. The nomination process is officially under way.
Last year, we received more than 50 nominations. I expect a similar number this year. The forms are reviewed and the honorees chosen by a group here at the paper. Nominations are due by Feb. 1, and winners will be chosen by Feb. 6 and announced in the Sunday paper on Feb. 10. I am one of the people on the selection committee, and I look forward each year to looking at the nominations. Just about all of them are deserving.
There are several ways to nominate someone. The nomination form can be mailed to Sue Shafer, the newspaper's event coordinator, emailed to Shafer at firstname.lastname@example.org or submitted through the Virtual Newsroom on tribtoday.com. They also can be dropped off here at the newspaper at 240 Franklin St. S.E., Warren, OH 44483.
Just to share a little history, the newspaper started this program in 2002 and partnered with the Trumbull County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is no longer involved with our program.
This is a great event. It recognizes the good in people in the area. Lots of times, good people and the work they do get overlooked. The people who do these selfless things don't particularly want to be recognized; they just do things for the community because it's the right thing to do. But that's why we have this event.
Last year's honorees were Ali Bashir of Warren; Martin L. Cohen of Cortland; Michele Jones of Warren; Helen Ruth McKenzie of Vienna; James J. Mariano of Warren; David Moore of Cortland; Nancy Olds of Bazetta; Carol Olson of Howland; Ricky and Mackenzie Pasco of Hubbard; and Geneva Reid of Warren.
We will tell you all about them in a special section in the newspaper after the banquet. The section always is a good read. If you want to be moved by some of the nicest, most humble people who care about their community, save the date and attend the banquet. You will be glad you did. People who give many hours of volunteer service, acts of kindness or courageous acts are the people we are looking for.
So get those nominations submitted.
