KINSMAN - Bernice L. Barzak, 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Gillette Nursing Home with her family by her side.
She was born July 19, 1926, in Brownsville, Texas, the only daughter of Roland and Lola Peters Winchell.
Bernice was a Democratic Precinct committee woman for more than 30 years, served as Johnston Township Trustee for five years, was the first elected Lady Trustee and also served as a Girl Scout troop leader. She worked at Mullins Manufacturing.
Bernice was a spirited and compassionate woman who loved attending sporting events and student activities for her grandchildren as well as her great-grandchildren. She was an avid and dedicated daily walker, in sunshine or snow. She could be seen walking her daily route on Warner Road. Above all other things, she loved her family and the time spent with them.
She leaves behind her husband, Donald, with whom she shared 67 years of marriage; three children, Donald (Joyce) Barzak, Barbara J. Barzak and Thomas L. (Cindy) Barzak, all of Johnston; five grandsons; Donald, Stephen, Christopher, Scott and Jason Barzak; and six great-grandchildren, Valerie, Justin, Jenna, Ty, Wyatt and Jakob.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Delbert, Robert, Gene and her twin brother, Jerry.
Funeral services will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes-Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St., Cortland, where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service.
