Thu 1:02 p.m.: Bar owner asks for injunction

YOUNGSTOWN - The owners of a South Side bar that was raided by Vice Squad members because their liquor license renewal was denied has filed suit against the city.

In papers filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Wednesday, the owners of the Coconut Grove on South Avenue said the raid was unwarranted because they say they still have a valid permit.

Police raided the bar after complaints from neighbors over several weeks that alcohol was still being served there even though they lost their permit. The city contends that the bar cannot serve alcohol because even though they are appealing the revocation of their liquor license, the state denied them the right to sell liquor during the appeal.

The city wanted the bar shut down because of complaints about drug sales and use in the parking lot, litter and violence. A person was shot to death in the parking lot last October.
