The Youngstown State University Concert Band and Wind Ensemble and Dana School of Music alumni will honor the late Robert E. Fleming at a concert at 8 p.m. Monday at Stambaugh Auditorium.
The concert will be preceded by a tribute dinner at Stambaugh's Anne Kilcawley Christman Memorial Hall honoring Fleming, former YSU Director of Bands from 1968 to 1984 who died last year on Christmas day. Fleming, who lived in Warren, also was co-conductor of the W.D. Packard Concert Band.
The goal of the dinner is to fund an endowed scholarship in his name.
The concert, entitled ''Remembering Robert E. Fleming: A Musical Tribute,'' begins with the Concert Band opening with John Barnes Chance's ''Incantation and Dance.' Graduate conducting student Eric Bable will conduct ''Kaddish,'' an elegiac tribute by W. Francis McBeth. The Concert Band will close its set with a new work by Brian Balmages, ''Midnight on Main Street.''
The YSU Wind Ensemble will perform Vaughan Williams wind band classic, ''Toccata Marziale.'' Senior flutist Heidi Keener will perform Francois Borne's ''Carmen Fantasie.'' The Wind Ensemble's final piece, along with the Concert Band and Dana Alumni Band brass sections will close with Ottorino Respighi's epic tone poem, ''The Pines of Rome.''
The Dana All-Star Band is comprised of YSU band alumni from across the country. The All Star Band will pay tribute to Fleming, whose work helped elevate the YSU Band program to a nationally recognized status. The All Star Band will open its program with a march medley that includes ''Mad Major'' and ''Barnum and Bailey's Favorite.'' as well as ''Amazing Grace'' and Bainum's transcription of Kalinnikov's Symphony No. 1 in G Minor: IV Finale.
Brandt Payne and Stephen L. Gage conduct the YSU Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, and the Dana All Star Band will be led by Joseph Edwards, Donald W. Byo and Gage.
Alumni who want to participate in the Dana Alumni All Star Band should contact Gage at ysuconductor@ysu.edu. Those participating in the alumni band are asked to arrive at Bliss Hall by 2 p.m. Sunday for rehearsals from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Bliss Hall Room 2326 and at 6 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.
