Larry Smith, 29, 2305 Jackson St. S.W., remained at Trumbull Memorial Hospital Sunday night. An update on Smith's condition was not available at press time.

Meanwhile, police said they were questioning two uncharged, unnamed suspects officers apprehended shortly after the shooting. Police said the suspects were not injured.

According to reports, the shooting started just before 10:30 a.m. in the northwest corner of East Market Street and Elm Road. Police said they were not clear what happened leading up to the shooting.

Warren police Sgt. Joseph O'Grady said that in his 20 years with the Warren Police Department, he has never known of a shooting so intense.

"I'd say as far as the number of bullets and the area it covered, it was pretty involved," he said. "There was definitely a lot going on at one point.''

More than 40 shots were fired, including some that hit windows at 156 Elm Court, while several people, including children, were inside. Numerous gun shellings were scattered throughout the area, police said.

Sept. 27: Jeremy Cole, 21, of Warren, fatally shot about noon at 2220 Oak Circle S.W.

July 13: Zeboney A. Bess, 17, 2520 Kenwood St. S.W., fatally shot about 10 p.m. in the street near 2057 Hamilton St. S.W.

July 8: Deshawn Scott, also identified as Dshawn Scott, 36, a Detroit native living at 341 Charles Ave. S.E., fatally shot about 1 a.m. in the home.

Jan. 12: Domin'que L. Hugley, 21, 2042 Saratoga Ave., S.W., found shot to death about 8 p.m. in a yard at 796 Third St. S.W.

They said most of the shooting took place in a nearby parking lot, which is adjacent to a daycare center. Individuals at the establishment, who did not want to provide their names, said the facility was closed at the time of the shooting and that workers had arrived after it was over.

According to reports, people involved in the gunfire ran northeast between 156 and 164 Elm Road. Police said Smith flagged down a car occupied by two women, who took him to the hospital.

O'Grady said that officers were familiar with Dukes and that he had had several brushes with local law enforcement.

Officers remained on the scene much of the day, collecting evidence and securing the area, which remained roped off with police tape.

Initially, witnesses reported that possibly four people had been shot. Early on, officers said they believed three men were injured.

At one point, a large crowd gathered outside of the emergency room at Trumbull Memorial Hospital requiring police to secure that area as well, O'Grady said.

Parishioners at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. N.E., Warren, became involved, confronting individuals believed to have participated in the shooting, and even attempting to detain them for police, according to reports.
