Playground to honor teen

DEDICATION PLANNED TO REMEMBER TEEN: The East River Gardens dedication ceremony in Newton Falls in memory of Everett Greathouse who died in July will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the gardens at Apache Park off Newton Drive. The ceremony will officially dedicate and name the playground the Everett Greathouse Memorial Playground. Greathouse was among those shot and killed in early July in Newton Falls. CALENDAR ART SHOW SHOWCASES WORK: The 14th annual calendar art show will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at DiVieste’s Banquet Room, 754 North River Road, Warren. The award ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. The winner’s art will be on exhibit along with the staff’s “Top 10” picks from each location. There will be artists at work along with musical performances by the Fairhaven Drum Corp, dinner music provided by DJ Diamond Jim — who started his own business last year through an SBA grant — and guitarist Michael Alfrey. Five Fairhaven employees donated original pieces of their art to be in the silent auction to raise funds for the foundation to continue their mission of helping individuals with disabilities. GROUP TO DISCUSS PLANS: The Girard Junior Women will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Fork Restaurant on Belmont Avenue. The group will finalize plans for the Christmas bazaar in the Girard city building on the first weekend of December. The group also will present a check to the Girard Emmanuel Center for holiday needs in the Girard community with group approval at the November meeting. SHOP FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Bristolville United Methodist Church, Routes 45 and 88, will hold a shop for the holidays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The event is sponsored by Christian education. Call 330-240-3231. TOY SIGNUP SET: The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League, 290 W. Market St., Warren, is holding a Christmas toy sign-up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Those attending should bring photo identification, proof of residency and proof of children in care. Those who have signed up with other agencies are not eligible. CITIZEN AWARENESS TRAINING: The fall classes for the Citizen’s Police Awareness Academy Training will begin Thursday. Classes will run for eight consecutive weeks and cover “A Day in the Life of an Officer.” Classes include a Trumbull County Jail tour and Warren City police ride-along. Room is available for participants. Interested Warren city residents will need to turn in their application to Officer Geoff Fusco, 141 South St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.
