An opportunity to continue recovery

November 2, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

DEAR EDITOR:

The campaigning is almost over and it's time cast the ballots. While there are two candidates running for president, there is only one that will represent the majority of Americans and our Valley.

Obama has demonstrated that he deserve s a second term through his words and actions. Taking over an economy in the midst of recession, he has championed reforms that have benefited all Americans, not just a few. The day he took office the Dow stood at 8218. The Dow is now over 13000, that's a little over 1000 points from the record high. Unemployment is continuing to fall. The unemployment rate has fallen in 95% of American cities indicating that recovery is widespread and not regional. Consumer confidence is at its highest point since 2008. Housing starts are at a four year high. The statistics all point to one unmistakable conclusion, our economy is getting better and credit should be given to the Obama administration for charting the course to economic recovery and for implementing policies that continue to nurture its growth. Credit too must be given to those in Congress who believe that bipartisanship will lead to a better and more prosperous America for everyone. Much has been written and said about the pros and cons of Obamacare.

Our Congress has talked about health care reform for the last 40 years and President Obama is the only one who did more than talk. I for one am proud to say that my country will not exclude anyone from receiving medical benefits based on preexisting conditions or not having to inform a parent that their child has exhausted their maximum coverage and will no longer is covered by traditional insurance. Caring for those least able to help themselves is not a choice. It is the American way. It simply must be done. This is the vision of America from our parents and grandparents who worked hard and long so that we might have a better life than them. How can we turn our backs on their legacy? How many more years must the poor and middle class continue to pay the price?

Can we trust a man, who refuses to release tax returns, has bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, owns at least 7 homes and continues to hold interest in companies that ship our jobs to China? Does this sound your typical American, one who will have your best interests at heart? A man who will help Ohio and the Mahoning Valley prosper?

We have the opportunity to continue the recovery by re-electing a man who has shown through actions and not words that he best represents the vision of America and out Valley, the one that our ancestors fought and died for. Will you wake up on November 7 look your children in the eye, think of your parents and grandparents struggles and know that when it really counted you stood up and did what was right?
