Peter W. Hunkus 1920-2012

HOWELL, Mich.- Peter William Hunkus, 92, of Howell, Mich., passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

He was born April 13, 1920, in Cokeburg, Pa., the son of Frank and Mary Hunkus.

Formerly of Vernon and Kinsman, Peter had been a Michigan resident for the past five years.

He was a 1936 graduate of Vernon High School, a World War II Army veteran and recipient of five Bronze Stars, having served in Europe, and a retired millwright for the former Schaffer Equipment Co. of Warren. Peter was also a former volunteer fireman for the Burghill Fire Department and member of the Kinsman Masonic Lodge.

He was the beloved husband of Adelaide Boeving Hunkus, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1948, in Castle Shannon, Pa. He was the loving father of Pete (Marjorie) Hunkus of Kinsman, Darrae (Terry) Shoenberger of Hartland, Mich., Stephen Hunkus of Collerville, Tenn., and Michael (Candy) Hunkus of Bellville, Fla.; and also is survived by 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic and veteran's honors, at MacDonald's Funeral Home, 315 N. Michigan Ave., Howell, Mich., 517-546-2800. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Vernon at a later date.
