DEAR EDITOR:
There are five things to consider before voting this year:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation. I have never seen this country so divided in my life on everything. I see uncertainty in every aspect of our lives. There is nothing we can either count on, rely on or be certain of. People do not know what we will have for our medical, if we will be able to retain our current doctors, what we will have to pay for in medical bills, Nancy Pelosi said "we will just have to wait and see." Nice thought, but what do they care for; they will not be on the new health care. Gas prices change every day, food prices are so out of sight and people are having trouble buying food.
I do not like being at the mercy of our very own government which thinks it knows what is best for us. I want to tell our government leaders right now, "You are not doing a good job." Who can you trust? One of them is lying, and one is telling the truth, but who? I see the commercial telling us, "We the people" will have to decide what we want from either candidate. Since when have we been able to decide what we want?
Since the Vietnam War and given the right to vote, term after term, president after president, speech after speech, listening to these people saying they will stamp out hunger, they will solve unemployment, they will solve the problems of our schools, they will solve our energy problems, they know what is best for women's health, they will solve the drug problem, they will solve immigration, they will end the war, they will turn our country around for the better, but for whom?
It seems it only benefits those at the federal level. In all these years, I have never seen it happen. I am loyal to principals of fiscal responsibility and limited government, not to party or politician. But who? I have no idea what party our mayor of Niles belongs to, but I do know that our local government is the only functioning government I can count on.
